What do I do?
Many people refer to me as a "computer guy", but what do I really do for a living?
I earn my living as a software developer, creating exciting new software applications that help people save time, make more money, or just have fun. Typically I use Visual Studio or Zend Studio to develop robust C# or PHP web-based applications with Microsoft SQL, MySQL or Postgres database server backends. Frequently I utilize my perl and unix shell experience to make quick and easy work of complex tasks. I quickly can turn unstructured text into meaningful data with XML, XHTML, CSS, regex, sed, awk, or any number of utilities or structured markup tools.
- What is a software engineer?

Demonstrates expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. May provide consultation on complex projects and is considered to be a specialist in his or her field. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. May report to an executive or a manager.
If the description above does not make sense to you and you still want to know what my job is, then just know that I write useful computer programs. I don't understand or care to know about the workings of a pc. I do not fix, repair, or install computers. I can't remove viruses from your computer. I don't use Microsoft Office: word, excel, powerpoint etc.. so please don't ask for help. I would love to discuss with you thoughts about the benefits and drawbacks of object oriented programming methods, but I don't care to talk about the most recent email you received that had a really funny picture, a joke, or worse yet, some sappy pass-it-on message.
- computer programmer (software)
- A person who designs the logic for and writes the lines of codes of a computer program. A programmer may also be considered a software engineer or software developer.
Where am I?
I live in Edenton, North Carolina. If you want to know just exactly what I am doing this minute, sneak a peek at my webcam and see if I am online, or take a look outside my office window at work. Someday in the future I could see myself living in south Florida... *dreams* :)
Developing new and unique software applications is a very rewarding job. The tools are constantly evolving and new software releases and operating system changes show up every day. It can sure keep you busy, but I honestly love it.
